THE IMPACT OF AN EDUCATIONAL INTERVENTION ON KNOWLEDGE AND COMPLIANCE WITH INFECTION CONTROL AT THE CENTRAL HIGHLANDS REGIONAL GENERAL HOSPITAL IN 2024: AN INTERVENTION STUDY
Main Article Content
Abstract
Background: Hospital-acquired infections are particularly severe in low- and middleincome countries. In Vietnam, the proportion of nurses with adequate infection control knowledge is only 52.4–58.7%, and few studies have evaluated the effectiveness of educational intervention packages integrated with supportive supervision in improving practice compliance. Objectives: (1) To determine the baseline proportion of adequate knowledge and compliance with essential infection control (IC) procedures among nurses at the Central Highlands Regional General Hospital in 2024, and (2) to evaluate the effectiveness of a structured educational intervention program in improving nurses' IC knowledge and compliance. Materials and methods: A pre-post intervention study was conducted on 312 nurses at the Central Highlands Regional General Hospital from January to July 2024. Knowledge and compliance regarding four infection control procedures (routine handwashing, rapid hand antisepsis, intravenous injection, and wound dressing change) were collected using a structured questionnaire and covert observation methods. The intervention involved hands-on training with supportive supervision, followed by an evaluation one month postintervention. Results: Before the intervention, 87.5% of nurses had adequate knowledge, and 52.6% complied with all IC procedures. After the intervention, the rate of adequate knowledge was 93.6% (an increase of 6.1%, p=0.009), and the practice compliance rate reached 81.4% (an increase of 28.8%; p<0.001). Multivariable regression analysis indicated that the educational effectiveness was not confounded by demographic factors. Conclusion: The hands-on educational intervention with supervision was effective in improving both knowledge and clinical compliance and should be integrated into regular practical training programs.
