THE SITUATION OF REGULAR DEWORMING AND RELATED FACTORS IN SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN BINH THUY DISTRICT, CAN THO CITY IN 2021

Abstract
Background: The preventive activity for helminths in Vietnam has achieved encouraging results. However, the rate of periodic worm infections remains high, and the issue of regular deworming is still not prioritized in some localities. Objectives: To determine the rate of regular deworming and investigate the factors related to deworming in secondary school students in Binh Thuy district, Can Tho City. Materials and methods: A cross - sectional study was conducted on 674 secondary school students in Binh Thuy district, Can Tho City, be using a multistage cluster sampling method. Results: The rate of regular deworming among secondary school students over the past year was 57.1%. Only 66.0% students have good knowledge of regular deworming. Almost students deworming at school (60.2%) and at home (36.5%). The most main excuse for not deworming are not knowing of regular deworming (30.6%) and not minding (29.5%). Multivariate analysis results show that factors related to the situation of regular deworming were living with parents (OR=2.29; p=0.013) and knowledge of regular deworming (OR=3.7; p<0.001). Conclusions: The rate of regular deworming among secondary school students is relatively low. It is necessary to strengthen activities to improve knowledge and practices for the prevention of worm infections and deworming, thereby achieving the strategic objectives of early health care.
