TOTAL PHENOLIC, TOTAL FLAVONOID CONTENT AND ANTIOXIDANT ACTIVITY OF CUTLEAF GROUNDCHERRY (Physalis angulata)

Abstract
Background: Cutleaf groundcherry (Physalis angulata), a plant under Solanaceae family having many distinct biological activites, were studied to assess antioxidant and to analyze total phenolic, total flavonoid content on different parts (leaves, calyxes, fruits). Objectives: (1) Assess antioxidant activity using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazin (DPPH) and reducing power assay method; (2) Determine total phenolic and total flavonoid content using UV-Vis spectrometry. Materials and methods: Leaves, calyxes and fruits collected from Rach Gia, Kien Giang were extracted by sonication with methanol: water (70:30). The extraction was analyzed using DPPH assay, reducing power assay, Folin-Ciocalteu and aluminium chloride colormetric methods, respectively. Results: Results demonstrated that leaves extract exhibited as the highest antioxidant activity with lowest IC50 (383.2 ppm) and lowest EC50 (586.5 ppm), the excessive values on total phenolic and total flavonoid content, with 28.32 mg/g of acid gallic and 63.69 mg/g of quercetin equivalent per gram of dry extract. Conclusion: The study indicated that leaves, calyxes and fruits can be deemed as a good candidate for natural plant sources of antioxidants.
