ASSESSMENT OF NUTRITIONAL STATUS AND RELATED FACTORS IN THE ELDERLY IN O MON DISTRICT, CAN THO CITY IN 2018-2019

Abstract
Background: The elderly must to face many health problems in old age, in which nutritional abnormalities including malnutrition, overweight and obesity, have negative impacts on the health of the elderly. Maintaining a stable nutritional status help to prevent and to control many health risks. Objectives: to determine nutritional status in the elderly and to find out factor related to nutritional status in the elderly in O Mon district, Can Tho city. Materials and method: cross-sectional study design was conducted with a sample of 540 elderly people in O Mon district, Can Tho city. Results: The proportion of underweight, overweight and obesity in the elderly based on Body mass index (BMI) were 15.7% and 41.9%, respectively. The proportion malnourished and at risk of malnutrition in the elderly based on Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) tool were 11.5% and 43.5%, respectively. Related factors between malnourished based on the full MNA with p <0.05 such as: over 70 years old (OR =2.24), ethnic minority (OR = 2.23), smoking (OR = 2.2), not getting enough physical activity (OR = 4.9), less than 3 cups of rice per day (OR = 2.56), less than 5 days of eating vegetables per week (OR = 1.98), reduction/loss of appetite (OR = 2.57). Conclusion: Elderly nutrition is closely related to age, disease status, smoking, physical activity and diet. Therefore, future intervention studies need to focus on the above factors to have appropriate intervention measures.
