EFFECTIVENESS OF ABSORBABLE MINI- PLATES AND SCREWS IN ORBITAL LATERAL WALL FIXATION FOR ZYGOMATIC COMPLEX FRACTURE TREATMENT

Abstract

Background: The use of absorbable materials is able to overcome some disadvantages of facial bone fractures management. Objectives: This report is proposed to evaluate the effectiveness of using absorbable mini-plates and screws for orbital lateral wall fixation. Materials and methods: Twenty-six patients at HCM City were diagnosed zygomatic complex fractures and underwent surgical intervention using absorbable plates and screws for orbital lateral wall fixation. All patients were re-examinated at 01, 04, 16 weeks after operation to be evaluated the surgical outcomes. Results: The mean value of maximum interincisal distance at time of inspections was 37.543.37mm, 41.04 1.12mm, 41.04 1.12mm, respectively. All cases were successful, there were no hemorrhage, infection at surgery and postoperative time. The rate of facial numbness after the 16-month follow-up was 19.2%. The result also showed satisfactory facial symmetry, no noticeable scarring, and no functional impairment. Conclusion: Absorbable plates and screws fixation of orbital lateral wall, although technically more challenging and costly, are a viable alternative to traditional metal devices in selected patients.
