Abstract
Background: Ventilator-associated pneumonia is a severe condition with high mortality rate, mainly caused by multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria. Objectives: Describing characteristics of antibiotics resistance, determining results of treatment and relating risk factors in patients with ventilator-associated pneumonia caused by multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria in the intensive care unit at Can Tho Central General Hospital 2019-2020. Materials and methods: An analytical prospective cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted among 38 patients with ventilator-associated pneumonia caused by multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria. Results: Acinetobacter baunannii isolates accounted for 78.9%. Extensively drug resistant (XDR) bacteria accounted for 71.1%. Although resistance to colistin was low, resistance to remaining antibiotics was more than 80%. Failure of treatment related statistically significantly to fever on the first day of pneumonia; increasing level of creatinin on the first and the third day of pneumonia. Conclusions: Extensively drug resistant Gram-negative bacteria, mostly Acinetobacter baunannii, have made it difficult in the choice of antibiotics for treatment due to high resistance. Administering colistin could help improve results of treatment.
