SURVEY OF CLINICAL PRACTICE ENVIRONMENT FOR NURSING STUDENTS AT CAN THO UNIVERSITY OF MEDICINE AND PHARMACY

Abstract

  Background: Clinical practice is an important part of nursing education, this process helps students obtain necessary skills and practical experience that cannot be changed by theory or working on mannequins. Objectives: To survey the clinical practice environment of nursing students learning at Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy. Materials and methods: Descriptive crosssectional design, total population sampling with all nursing students in the final year, using selfcompleted questionnaires translated from the questionnaire about clinical learning environment for nursing students accepted by University College Cork (Ireland). The questionnaire was validated by a trial survey on 20 students after the translation and adjustment, the study was conducted by surveying 10 modules of clinical practice. Results: The participants included 82 students who were in the final year of nursing course and assessed four standards of the questionnaire, all items were assessed with high rate of fufilling (> 80%), 14.4% of students said that they were not familiarised with relevant emergency procedures, 15% of students said that relevant text books/journals/articles/IT resources/library are not available at the place of internship, there was no significant difference in the rate of fulfilling the criteria among the modules. Conclusion: all items were assessed with high rate of fufilling, however, it is necessary for students to access relevant emergency procedures and related nursing materials at the place of internship.
