Abstract

Background: Heart failure is one of the global health problems. Hyponatremia is strongly associated with heart failure and is an independent predictor of poor prognosis for patients with heart failure during hospitalization, especially in the reduced ejection fraction group. Objectives: Determine the proportion, the classification, related factors and the ability to predict severe outcomes of hyponatremia in patients with chronic heart failure reduced ejection fraction at Can Tho Central General Hospital 2022-2023. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out on 108 patients with chronic heart failure reduced ejection fraction at Cardiovascular Center-Can Tho Central General Hospital. Results: The proportion of hyponatremia was 37%; mild, moderate and severe hyponatremia were respectively 60%, 25% and 15%; there was a correlation between blood sodium concentration and symptoms of congestion, systolic blood pressure and NYHA classification. The value of serum sodium concentration in the prognosis of severe outcomes in patients with heart failure reduced ejection fraction at the cut-off point 130 mmol/L had a sensitivity of 98.8%, a specificity of 54.2%, AUC 0.799. Conclusions: Hyponatremia has the potential to predict severe outcomes in patients with heart failure reduced ejection fraction.
