Abstract

Background: The morphology and causes of chronic sinusitis are incredibly varied. To handle minimal damage and bring maximum efficiency, computed tomography is the best method for determining the cause and identifying anatomical abnormalities, which is considered a map in endoscopic sinus surgery. Objectives: 1) To describe the lesions on the computed tomography film in chronic sinusitis; 2) To  evaluate  the  computed tomography's usefulness in identifying the chronic sinusitis causes. Materials and methods: A prospective, discription, cross-sectional study on 150 chronic sinusitis patients undergoing endoscopic sinus surgery. Results: 65.3% of injuries occurred on one side, while 34.7% occurred on both sides. Maxillary sinus damage was 95.3%, ethmoid sinus damage was 51.3%, sphenoid sinus damage is 24%, and frontal sinus damage was 10.6%. 75.3% of the ostiomeatal complex condition is blocked. A deviated septum (55.3%), concha bullosa (18.6%), and enlarged inferior Turbinate (12.2%) were common types of deformities. In comparison to the outcomes of surgery, computed tomography scans' sensitivity and specificity in identifying the cause were: Fungal 93.5%, 97.5%; dental 94.1%, 98.5%; due to polyp 87.9%, 95.7%; due to tumor 68.8%, 97%; due to malformation: 100%. Conclusions: Computed tomography is the gold standard for diagnosing the causes of chronic sinusitis, has very high sensitivity and specificity, and is a required indication in endoscopic surgery.
