CLINICAL COMPETENCE AMONG NURSING STUDENTS AT CAN THO UNIVERSITY OF MEDICINE AND PHARMACY

Abstract

Background: Clinical competence is a pivotal factor related to nursing competence and quality of healthcare services. Then, fourth year nursing students’ clinical competence is vital factor which shows educational effectiveness and nursing professional status. Objectives: To evaluate clinical competence among nursing students at Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy. Material and method: We conducted a cross-sectional study with 65 bachelor nursing students in tfourth year. Student’s clinical competence was examined based on a self-reported questionnaire developed following Vietnamese nursing core competence. Results: The study indicated that 61.5% fourth year nursing students have a good level of clinical competence. Among 9 subscales, providing safe and effective care had the highest score; meanwhile handling emergencies and continuous care had the lowest. Conclusion: Nursing students showed a good clinical competence. However, there was a limited competence in responding to emergency and providing continuous care for patients. Training courses focused on handling emergency cases, nursing observation and evaluation were recommended to enhanced quality of nursing education.
