CLINICAL AND RADIOGRAPHIC CHARACTERISTICS OF PATIENTS WITH POSTERIOR MAXILLARY TOOTH LOSS WITH AN INDICATION FOR TRANSCRESTAL SINUS FLOOR ELEVATION IN CAN THO CITY
Main Article Content
Abstract
Background: Posterior maxillary tooth loss is commonly encountered in clinical practice. Preoperative assessment of clinical and radiographic characteristics plays an important role in prognosis and selection of an appropriate treatment approach. Objective: To describe the clinical and radiographic characteristics of patients with posterior maxillary tooth loss indicated for implant placement combined with transcrestal sinus floor elevation without bone grafting. Materials and methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted from July 2025 to January 2026 in 35 patients with 41 posterior maxillary edentulous sites indicated for implant placement combined with transcrestal sinus floor elevation without bone grafting. Results: Dental caries was the most common cause of tooth loss, accounting for 63.4%, and most missing teeth were molars, accounting for 85.3%. The duration of tooth loss exceeded 5 years in 65.9% of cases. Bone density was predominantly classified as D3 (95.1%). The angle between the lateral and medial walls of the maxillary sinus was greater than 60° in 82.9% of cases. The mean residual bone height and bone width were 4.67 ± 0.71 mm and 8.90 ± 1.82 mm, respectively, with a significant positive correlation between these parameters (r = 0.442, p = 0.004). The mean Schneiderian membrane thickness and sinus wall thickness were 1.78 ± 0.75 mm and 2.19 ± 0.38 mm, respectively, and were also significantly positively correlated (r = 0.517, p = 0.001). Conclusion: Patients with posterior maxillary tooth loss demonstrated relatively favorable clinical and radiographic characteristics for transcrestal sinus floor elevation.
