Abstract

Background: Ocular microvascular complications, particularly Diabetic Retinopathy, progress insidiously and are showing an increasing trend in prevalence. The disease can lead to vision loss; therefore, early diagnosis and timely treatment to prevent complications play a crucial role. Objectives: 1. To determine the prevalence of diabetic retinopathy in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus; 2. To identify factors associated with type 2 diabetic retinopathy; 3. To evaluate the treatment outcomes of non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy using fenofibrate. Materials and methods:  A randomized study was conducted on 212 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus at the Department of Endocrinology, Can Tho General Hospital from September 2024 to February 2026. Results: The mean age was 62.45 ± 11.87 years; males accounted for 41.5% and females for 58.5%. The prevalence of diabetic retinopathy was 43.9%. History of hypertension, duration of diabetes, smoking, and HbA1c levels were significant risk factors for diabetic retinopathy, with odds ratios (OR) of 2.14 (95% CI: 1.23–3.73), 3.1 (95% CI: 1.8– 5.6), 2.17 (95% CI: 1.17–4.03), and 3.9 (95% CI: 1.7–8.9), respectively; there was no significant difference between the fenofibrate group and the control group (p >0,05). Conclusion: Screening is essential for the early detection of diabetic retinopathy, particularly in patients with a history of hypertension, long-standing diabetes, smoking habits, or poor glycemic control.
