Abstract

Background: The demand for orthodontic treatment has increased considerably. Microosteoperforations (MOPs) are a minimally invasive technique that enhances the regional acceleratory phenomenon and may shorten orthodontic treatment time. Objectives: To describe the baseline clinical and lateral cephalometric characteristics of Angle Class I malocclusion patients indicated for tooth extraction before orthodontic treatment assisted by micro-osteoperforations (MOPs) at Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital from 2024 to 2026. Materials and methods:  This cross-sectional descriptive study used baseline data from a single-blind, split-mouth randomized clinical trial. Thirty-four patients aged 16–25 years indicated for first premolar extraction were recruited at Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital between 2024 and 2026. Results: Among the participants, 85.2% exhibited facial symmetry in the frontal view and 73.5% presented with a convex profile. The mean PAR and weighted PAR (PARW) scores were 15.95 ± 4.58 and 23.90 ± 7.11, respectively, with anterior crowding as the predominant component. Cephalometric analysis showed a mild skeletal Class II tendency with SNA 85.69 ± 1.86°, SNB 81.08 ± 1.58°, and ANB 4.86 ± 0.78° (p < 0.001). Dental measurements demonstrated protrusion and proclination of both maxillary and mandibular incisors (U1–SN 115.28 ± 5.50°; L1–NB 5.57 ± 1.39 mm; p < 0.001). Soft tissue analysis revealed protrusive upper and lower lips relative to the E-line (p < 0.001). Conclusion: Angle Class I malocclusion patients indicated for tooth extraction mainly exhibited dental crowding, bimaxillary incisor protrusion, lip protrusion, and a mild skeletal Class II tendency. These baseline characteristics provide important information for extraction-based orthodontic treatment planning and serve as a basis for subsequent analyses of the effectiveness of micro-osteoperforations.
