EVALUATION OF CLINICAL OUTCOMES FOLLOWING ANTERIOR CERVICAL DECOMPRESSION AND FUSION IN SUBAXIAL CERVICAL SPINE INJURIES

Abstract
Background: Subaxial cervical spine injuries involve damage to the vertebral bodies, intervertebral discs, spinal cord and surrounding ligamentous structures at levels C3–C7. These injuries are frequently associated with a high risk of neurological deficits and may result in severe long-term disability if not appropriately managed. In recent years, anterior decompression and fusion surgery has been widely applied and has demonstrated favorable postoperative functional recovery. Objective: To evaluate the clinical outcomes of anterior decompression and fusion surgery in the treatment of subaxial cervical spine injuries. Materials and methods: A prospective descriptive study was conducted on 21 patients with subaxial cervical spine injuries who underwent anterior decompression and fusion surgery at Can Tho Central General Hospitalfrom May 2024 to August 2025. Results: Good-to-fair clinical outcomes were observed in 76.2% of patients. Moderate outcomes accounted for 19.0%, while a poor outcome was reported in one patient (4.8%). Conclusion: Anterior decompression and fusion surgery is an effective treatment for subaxial cervical spine injuries. It restores spinal alignment and improves neurological function in the majority of patients.
