Abstract

Background: Colon cancer is a common malignancy, with bowel obstruction occurring in 15–30% of cases, representing a severe surgical emergency. Patients often present late with exhausted physical conditions, posing significant challenges in selecting the appropriate surgical approach. Objective: To evaluate the outcomes of one-stage colectomy with primary anastomosis in patients with obstructive colon cancer. Materials and methods:  A prospective, descriptive case series study was conducted on 30 patients. Results: In total, there were 30 patients (21 men and 9 women) with a mean age was 65.03 ± 11.47 years. The mean operation time was 148.83 ± 43.93 minutes. 100% of cases had negative resection margins. The postoperative complication rate was 10% with 2 cases of anastomotic leak, 1 case of surgical site infection, and the mean postoperative hospital stay was 8.47 ± 2.47 days. There were no in-hospital mortalities. Conclusion: One-stage colectomy with primary anastomosis is a feasible treatment and has initially demonstrated safety in carefully selected patients with colon cancer obstruction.
