EVALUATION OF SURGICAL TREATMENT OUTCOMES OF HAND WOUNDS WITH FLEXOR TENDON INJURIES AT CAN THO CENTRAL GENERAL HOSPITAL

Abstract

Background: Flexor tendon injuries in hand wounds are common. The flexor tendons in the hand are anatomically divided into 5 zones, each requiring different surgical approaches for tendon repair. Optimal management of flexor tendon injuries in the hand remains a challenge in hand surgery, aiming to enhance treatment efficacy, our research team conducted this study to evaluate the outcomes of managing hand wounds associated with flexor tendon injuries. Objectives: To investigate the characteristics and evaluate the treatment outcomes of hand wounds with flexor tendon injuries. Materials and methods:  A prospective cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 34 patients with flexor tendon injuries in hand wounds who underwent tendon repair at Can Tho Central General Hospital from May 2025 to March 2026. Results: The study on 34 patients (comprising 51 fingers), showed that 70.6% of patients had combined injuries of the Flexor Digitorum Superficialis (FDS) and Flexor Digitorum Profundus (FDP). Zone II had the highest frequency of injury (accounting for 52.9%). The rate of primary wound healing was 97.1% and tendon re-rupture rate was 2.9%. Assessment according to Strickland criteria after 3 months revealed: 23.5% excellent, 52.9% good, 17.7% fair, and 5.9% poor outcomes. Conclusions: Early tendon repair in hand wounds with flexor tendon injuries is considered safe, facilitates early active mobilization and yields relatively favorable outcomes.
