Abstract

Background: Pneumonia is the leading cause of death in children under 5 years old. The care of children with pneumonia requires ensuring adequate respiratory support, infection control, administration of prescribed medications in accordance with medical orders, maintenance of appropriate nutritional status, provision of health education, and prevention of potentially lifethreatening complications. Therefore, to deliver effective care for this population, nursing students’ self-efficacy in clinical practice-as the future nursing workforce-plays a critically important role. Objective: To assess the level of self-efficacy in caring for children with pneumonia aged 2 months to 5 years among nursing students at Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 113 third and fourth-year nursing students using a self-administered questionnaire. Data was analyzed using SPSS software. Results: The results showed that the mean score of self- efficacy in caring for children with pneumonia was 97.6+14.4 scores. The majority of students, 76.1%, are confident in caring for children with pneumonia, while 23.9% are not confident. Specifically, students demonstrated confidence through respecting the privacy and comfort of the children (mean+SD=4.14±0.64). Furthermore, students lacked confidence in providing appropriate nursing diagnoses for children's medical conditions (mean+SD=3.54±0.780). Conclusion: Although 76.1% of nursing students reported confidence in caring for children with pneumonia, their level of confidence still requires considerable improvement. The development of specialized workshops and the enhancement of clinical practice experiences are necessary to improve nursing students’ confidence in providing care for pediatric patients with pneumonia.
