Abstract

Background: Research mentoring contributes to the academic development of junior nursing faculty. Objectives: To describe the mentoring process for a junior faculty member at Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine, changes in academic capacity, outcomes, and lessons learned. Materials and methods: A descriptive case study examined the mentoring process from 2020 to 2026 between an experienced mentor and a junior nursing faculty member. Data comprised mentoring journals, academic activities, and mentee feedback. Results: The mentee improved research skills and autonomy; led or participated in four research projects, published eight articles, and supervised two undergraduate theses; received an award at the 2024 National Young Health Science Conference, a Certificate of Merit from the Vietnam Nurses Association, and the title of Outstanding Nurse of Vietnam in 2025. Flexible mentoring, a supportive environment, and the mentee’s proactiveness contributed to these outcomes. Conclusion: Mentoring that combines formal and informal approaches with sustained mentor support may contribute to the academic and professional development of junior faculty.
