Abstract
Background: Chronic urticaria is characterized by recurrent and unpredictable episodes of wheals that appear once or several times per day, or every few days. Although chronic urticaria is rarely life-threatening, it significantly impairs patients’ quality of life, leading to both psychological and physical distress. Objectives: To describe the clinical and paraclinical characteristics of patients with chronic urticaria at Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital and Can Tho Dermatology Hospital. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 45 patients diagnosed with chronic urticaria at Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital and Can Tho Dermatology Hospital. Results: The most common age group was 18–40 years (37.8%), with a female predominance (57.8%). The main symptoms included pruritus and wheals (71.1%), abdominal pain (35.6%), angioedema (31.1%), nausea (26.7%), and fever (17.8%). The most frequent sites of pruritus and wheals were the trunk (46.9%), arms (37.5%), head–neck (9.4%), and legs (6.3%). The timing of lesion appearance was mostly unpredictable (90.6%), with fewer cases occurring at night (6.3%) or during the day (3.1%). The degree of impact on quality of life was moderate in 68.9% of patients, mild in 26.7%, and severe in 4.4%, according to the CU-Q2oL (Chronic Urticaria Quality of Life Questionnaire) scale. Anemia was observed in 24.4% of cases. Leukocytosis was found in 15.6%, mainly due to eosinophilia (15.6%). Conclusion: Pruritus and wheals were present in 71.1% of patients, most commonly on the trunk (46.9%), with lesions appearing unpredictably in 90.6% of cases. The disease moderately affected patients’ quality of life (68.9%) according to the CU-Q2oL scale. Anemia was detected in 24.4%, and eosinophilia in 15.6% of patients.
