Abstract

Background: Anaphylaxis is a life-threatening medical emergency that requires rapid recognition and immediate management. Anaesthetic Nurses play a crucial role in both the prevention and treatment of anaphylactic reactions. Therefore, equipping Anaesthetic Nursing Students with adequate knowledge during their training is essential for ensuring patient safety. Objective: To assess the level of knowledge among Anaesthetic Nursing Students regarding the prevention and management of anaphylaxis, and to identify associated factors. Materials and methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among 180 third-year and fourth-year Anaesthetic Nursing Students at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy at Ho Chi Minh City. Results: Only 34.4% of students demonstrated adequate general knowledge of anaphylaxis. The proportions of students with adequate knowledge of prevention and management were 89.4% and 22.2%, respectively. Prior self-directed learning about anaphylaxis was significantly associated with better knowledge of prevention. Moreover, general knowledge was significantly related to both prevention and management knowledge. Conclusion: Anaesthetic Nursing students demonstrated a high level of knowledge regarding anaphylaxis prevention, but their knowledge of anaphylaxis management remains limited. Prior exposure to information about anaphylaxis and having accurate general knowledge were significantly associated with both prevention and management knowledge.
