Abstract

Background: Serious complications such as renal compromise, anuria and sepsis are often the result of untimely treatment, especially bilateral ureteral stones. Currently, surgery is the main treatment method, with retrograde intrarenal surgery (RIRS) utilizing Holmium Laser lithotripsy is considered the most optimal method to achieve high efficiency in the treatment of bilateral ureteral stones. Objectives: To evaluate the results of bilateral ureteral stone treatment using Holmium Laser at Can Tho Central General Hospital and Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital in 1/2023-1/2025. Materials and methods: A prospective and cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 47 patients diagnosed with bilateral ureteral stones and treated at Can Tho Central General Hospital and Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital in 1/2023 to 1/2025. Results: There were 47 patients,  Male/Female ratio: 1.5/1. Mean age: 43.5 ± 15.2 years old. Among patients presenting to the hospital with flank pain (74.2%), 57.5% had renal impairment. The mean stone size was 12.35 ± 4.65mm, and the majority of stones (62.7%) were located in the upper ureter. 100% of patients had hydronephrosis, primarily grade I (49.5%). Average operating time: 45.5 ± 35.21 minutes. Mean hospital stay: 2.8 ± 1.7 days. Surgical outcomes: Mostly yielded good results (95,7%), no complications or adverse events were recorded. Conclusion: The treatment of bilateral ureteral stones using retrograde ureteroscopy (URS) with Holmium Laser energy offers high efficacy(95.7%), while ensuring patient safety and a short hospital recovery time.
