Abstract

Background: Chronic otitis media with ossicular chain damage is a leading cause of hearing loss and ranks as the third most common disease among adults. It significantly impacts patients’ quality of life, education, work, and social communication. Objectives: 1) To describe the clinical and paraclinical characteristics of chronic otitis media with ossicular chain damage at Can Tho Otolaryngology Hospital in 2023-2025; 2) To evaluate the treatment outcomes of chronic otitis media with ossicular chain damage through surgical intervention at Can Tho Otolaryngology Hospital in 2023-2025. Materials and Methods: The study included 30 patients with chronic otitis media and ossicular chain damage who sought examination and treatment at Can Tho Ear, Nose, and Throat Hospital and Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital from October 2023 to June 2025. Using a cross-sectional descriptive. Interviewing the patient, medical examination, and collecting information through the research medical record. Results: The most frequently recorded symptom was hearing loss, accounting for 90.6%. The majority of patients had a perforated tympanic membrane (71.9%), with mixed hearing loss being predominant (81.6%). Hearing loss was mostly classified as degree II (34.4%) and degree III (50%). Three months post-surgery, clinical symptoms showed significant improvement. Surgical treatment with ossicular chain reconstruction yielded favorable outcomes, with a tympanic membrane healing rate of 93.75% and good hearing recovery. Conclusions: Hearing loss is the most common symptom in patients with chronic otitis media with ossicular chain damage. Endoscopy and audiometry are invaluable tools for the diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up of the disease. Ossiculoplasty, performed according to the specific type of ossicular damage, provides favorable outcomes, with the surgical method and replacement materials chosen appropriately based on the lesion’s morphology.
