Abstract

Background: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is among the most prevalent psychiatric and behavioral disorders in children. The highest prevalence of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is observed in primary school-aged children. Accurate assessment of the prevalence of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and timely intervention are essential in improving the quality of life for affected children. Objectives: 1) To determine the prevalence and identify certain risk factors associated with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in children aged 6 to 8 years; 2) To assess the impact of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder on children's performance. Materials and methods: A crosssectional descriptive study with analysis was conducted on 426 children aged 6 to 8 years enrolled in primary schools in Can Tho city from April 2023 to March 2024. Results: The prevalence of children aged 6 to 8 years at risk of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in primary schools in Can Tho City is 4.7%, with hyperactivity being the most dominant subtype (3.1%). Statistically significant differences in disease prevalence were found between different age groups (p=0.027, OR=0.18). Children at risk of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder exhibited significantly lower mean scores in academic performance, social relationships, and organizational skills compared to their non-risk peers across all measured domains. These differences were statistically significant. Conclusion: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder risk is relatively prevalent in primary school-aged children, with an observed prevalence rate of 4.7%. This condition substantially impairs children's academic performance, social relationships, and organizational skills.
