EVALUATION OF CATARACT TREATMENT OUTCOMES USING PHACOEMULSIFICATION AT CANTHO OPHTHALMOLOGY AND ODONTO-STOMATOLOGY HOSPITAL IN 2023-2024

Abstract
Background: Cataract is one of the leading causes of preventable blindness. Phacoemulsification is the gold standard for cataract surgery, offering rapid visual recovery, minimal postoperative pain, and reduced complications. Objectives: To evaluate the visual outcomes and safety of phacoemulsification in cataract patients at Can Tho Ophthalmology and Odonto-Stomatology Hospital from 2023 to 2024. Materials and methods: A non-randomized interventional clinical study was conducted on 114 eyes diagnosed with cataracts and treated with phacoemulsification surgery at the Department of Ophthalmology, Can Tho Ophthalmology and Odonto-Stomatology Hospital from 2023 to 2024. Results: At 3 months, 59.7% of patients achieved good unaided VA (≤0.15logMAR), significantly improving from 42.1% at 1 week. With spectacle correction, this rate increased to 65.8%. Normal IOP (8-21mmHg) was observed in 93,9% of patients at 3 months. The percentage of patients with mild astigmatism (<0.5D) increased from 25.4% at 1 week to 31.6% at 3 months. There were 5 eyes (4.4%) with wound burns and 7 eyes (6.1%) with corneal edema. Posterior capsule rupture occurred in 2 eyes (1.6%), all successfully managed, and intraocular lenses were implanted in all cases. Conclusion: Phacoemulsification is a safe and effective method for cataract treatment, providing significant visual improvement from the first postoperative week.
