Abstract

Background: According to the World Health Organization (WHO), hand hygiene practice is the top priority measure to reduce the risk of infection in healthcare facilities. Nursing students, who play a direct role in patient care, need to possess solid knowledge and skills in hand hygiene. Although routine hand hygiene (RHH) education is integrated into the training curriculum, there are still many limitations in both practice and attitudes related to hand hygiene. Objective: To assess the status of knowledge, attitudes, and practices of routine hand hygiene among nursing students at Dai Nam University and identify some related factors. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 111 nursing students. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 26.0. Descriptive statistics and inferential statistics with Chi-square tests were applied, with a 95% confidence interval and significance level set at p <0.05. Results: 94.6% of students achieved “Good” knowledge of routine hand hygiene, 56.8% had a “Positive” attitude, and 44.1% demonstrated “Good” practice. Students with “Good” knowledge showed more “Positive” attitudes and higher rates of “Good” practice compared to those with “Poor” knowledge (p <0.05). Conclusion: Most nursing students have “Good” knowledge of routine hand hygiene; however, the proportions of “Positive” attitudes and “Good” practice remain limited. The study found a statistically significant correlation between knowledge, attitudes, and practices of routine hand hygiene.
