Abstract

Background: In 2017, Viet Nam piloted Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP). There were only 03 new HIV infections in 18 months. Objectives: To determine the rate of adherence to PrEP, to identify some associated factors to adherence to PrEP, and to evaluate the results of PrEP in patients with behaviors at risk of HIV infection. Materials and methods: People who had behaviors at risk of HIV infection registered for PrEP treatment in Ba Ria - Vung Tau province from July 2019 to December 2020. They are followed until June 2021. The method was a crosssectional study with analysis. The whole sampling method was used. Results: Out of 256 people, 52.7% were male; the age group 20-39 accounted for 80.5%; self-employed accounted for 46.9%; men who have sex with men accounted for 45.7%. The rate of subjects who adhered to PrEP treatment was 47.7%. Using multivariable logistic regression analysis, several factors associated with adherence to PrEP treatment were found, including age, occupation, having sex with HIVinfected persons with untreated or unknown infection status, and not using condoms during sex. Results showed that 46.1% of subjects responded to PrEP and one subject was newly infected with HIV. Conclusion: The rate of adherence to HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis is 47.7%. Some factors related to the adherence of subjects are age, occupation, sexual behavior with HIV-infected people who have not been treated or have unknown HIV status, and not using condoms during sex. There was one person infected with HIV, occupying 0.4%. It is recommended to support treatment adherence for those under the age of 20; a freelance workforce; develop a peer network; guiding combine PrEP treatment and the maintenance of condom use during sex to prevent HIV and sexually transmitted infections.
