FREQUENCY OF OBSTRUCTIVE SLEEP APNEA AND NOCTURNAL OXYGEN DESATURATION IN PATIENTS WITH CHRONIC OBSTRUCTIVE PULMONARY DISEASE
Main Article Content
Abstract
Background: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common condition, with an incidence rate of 80.1% in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients. Overlap syndrome carries a high risk of death as well as an increased risk of exacerbations if obstructive sleep apnea is left untreated. Objectives: 1) To determine the prevalence of obstructive sleep apnea in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease; 2) To determine the prevalence of nocturnal oxygen desaturation in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Materials and methods: Randomized study of 60 patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease at the respiratory clinic, Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital from April 2023 to August 2024. Results: The mean age of patients was 73.8 ± 9.31, and the male proportion was 98.3%. Obstructive sleep apnea rate in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease was 53.3%. The nocturnal oxygen desaturation rate in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease was 43.3%. The group of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease with nocturnal oxygen desaturation had an average BMI of 22.3 ± 3.71 Kg/m2, an average daytime SpO2 of 91.77 ± 1.58%. Conclusions: Early detection of sleep obstructive apnea and nocturnal oxygen desaturation in patients with COPD should be monitored. At the same time, a downward adjustment of body mass index in this group of patients is essential to improve the above condition.
