Abstract

Background: Puberty is a stage of life transitioning from childhood to adulthood. When the first signs of puberty appear before age 8 in girls and before age 9 in boys, it is called precocious puberty. Early puberty not only causes the official height to decrease compared to children with normal puberty, but also causes physiological and psychological disorders, inappropriate sexual and social behavior at a young age, and even other consequences. As bad as early puberty, the risk of breast cancer in adulthood increases. Objective: To determine the rate of precocious puberty and learn about the relationship of precocious puberty to some anthropometric and psychophysiological indicators in first-year female students at Da Nang University of Medical Technology and Pharmacy. Materials and method: Cross-sectional descriptive research conducted on 385 first-year female students, Da Nang University of Medical Technology and Pharmacy, school year 2022 - 2023. The period from June 2022 to June 2023 at Da Nang University of Medical Technology and Pharmacy. Results: The rate of precocious puberty in first-year female students was 1.8% out of 385 students. Female students with precocious puberty had an average final height (150.4 ± 4.3 cm) lower than female students with normal puberty (156.6 ± 5.3 cm) with p < 0.05. There was a relationship between precocious puberty and psychological symptoms of guilt, low self-esteem and shame when the breast buds develop with p < 0.05. The rate of female students with precocious puberty having sex was 28.6%, higher than the rate of female students with normal puberty having sex, which was 5.0%.
