Abstract

Background: Chronic inflammation is a major factor in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis in hemodialysis patients. Objectives: To analyze of the relationship between neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio  and some clinical and subclinical characteristics in end stage renal disease  (ESRD) at Thai Nguyen National Hospital. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study of 156 patients with ESRD with hemodialysis at Thai Nguyen Central Hospital. Results: The patients had average age of 58.4 (year) and average duration of hemodialysis of 46.9 months. The NLR in patients with elevated hsCRP levels (>3 mg/L) was significantly higher compared to those without elevated hsCRP levels (≤3 mg/L) (4.59±0.78 vs. 2.48±0.92). NLR was weak positive correlation with age (r=0.24), ure level (r=0.23), leukocytes (r=0.38) in patients with ESRD on hemodialysis. NLRwas moderate positive correlation with hs-CRP (r=0.63) in patients with ESRD on hemodialysis. The area under the ROC curve, cutoff point, sensitivity, and specificity of NLR in predicting chronic inflammation were 0.9682, 3.84, 98.73%, and 94.81%, respectively. Conclussions: NLR was positively correlated with hs-CRP in ESRD on hemodialysis. NLR might be predicion for identifying inflammation in this population.
