SURVEYING THE SITUATION OF OVERWEIGHT AND OBESITY OF PRESCHOOL CHILDREN IN HUE CITY AND SOME RELATED FACTORS

Abstract

Background: The rates of overweight/obesity in the world and in Vietnam are increasing rapidly in all subjects. Overweight or obese children are at higher risk for long - term chronic diseases, increasing their risk of death in adulthood. Objectives: To survey the situation of overweight and obesity and some related factors of preschool children in Hue city. Material and methods: A cross - sectional descriptive study on 713 pairs of parents - children in 6 preschools in Hue city. Data was collected from July 2021 to July 2022. Children's height and weight are measured; The child's parents answered a set of prepared questions. SPSS 20 statistical program was used to analyze data. Results: The prevalence of overweight and obese children in Kindergartens at Hue city in 2021 to 2022 was 20.6% including overweight accounts for 10.4%; obesity accounted for 10.2%; The BMI of father or mother which was ≥ 23 increased  the child's risk of overtweight/obesity by 1.68 times (95% CI:1.92 – 6.57) while BMI of both father and mother which were ≥ 23 increased  the child's risk of overtweight/obesity by 3.56 time (95% CI:1.92 – 6.57); Gluttonous children increase the risk of overtweight/obesity by 2.7 times (95% CI:1.55 - 4.69); Children who like fatty foods increase the risk of overtweight/obesity by 1.89 times (95% CI:1.28 - 2.80). Conclusion: The rate of overweight – obesity in preschool children in Hue city is high and is related to their eating habits and the BMI of their parents.
