EVALUATION OF THE RESULTS OF PHACOEMULSIFICATION CATARACT SURGERY AND INFLUENCING FACTORS IN DIABETIC PATIENTS AT KIEN GIANG GENERAL HOSPITAL
Main Article Content
Abstract
Background: Diabetes is a major risk factor for retinopathy and cataract development. Cataract surgery in diabetics may be challenging due to preexisting diabetic eye disease and a higher rate of intra- and postoperative complications that may impact the rate of visual recovery and final visual outcome. Objectives: To evaluate visual outcome, influencing factors in diabetic patients after phacoemulsification. Materials and methods: A cross‐sectional study was conducted on 90 eyes of 87 diabetic patients who had been phacoemulsification with intraocular lens implantation at Kien Giang Hospital from April 2023 to April 2024. Collecting data about age, sex, clinical characteristics, visual acuity pre and post operation, variable of event, complications intra and postoperative. Results: The mean age was 67.32 ± 8.19. The overall mean duration of diabetes was seen to be 7.19 ± 4.19 years. In the sample of 90 eyes, 76 eyes (84.4%) achieved a good visual outcome of 20/40 or better. At postoperative 1month, mean LogMar was 0.16 ± 0.09 in Non-Diabetic retinopathy patients and 0.29 ± 0.12 in diabetic retinopathy patients while difference in visual acuity was statistically significant (p<0.001). Conclusion: Among individuals with diabetes, phacoemulsification surgery achieves a good visual outcome of 20/40 or better with a high rate (84.4%) and safety. Factors affecting vision after surgery are preoperative visual acuity, age, diabetic retinopathy, and hardness of the lens.
