Abstract

Background: Colon cancer is a common malignant disease of the digestive tract, with high morbidity and mortality rate. Early diagnosis and correct assessment of the disease stage are of great help to the patient. Computed tomography is an imaging tool that can diagnose and evaluate the stage of colon cancer, helping to choose appropriate treatment and monitoring strategies. Objectives: To describe the imaging characteristics and value of computed tomography in assessment of the stage of tumor invasion and abdominal lymph node metastasis in colon cancer patients. Materials and methods: A prospective, cross sectional descriptive study was conducted on 51 patients who underwent computed tomography, surgery and got pathological results of colon cancer at Can Tho Central General Hospital from July 2022 to April 2024. Results: A total of 51 patients (26 males and 25 females, with the age of 34-94 years) were included in the study. Computed tomography accurately assessed the invasive stage of colon cancer in 82.4% of cases. The sensitivity and specificity of computed tomography when evaluating each invasive stage of colon cancer were T1/T2 (60.0%-93.5%), T3 (64.3%-89.2%), T4 (93.8%-89.5%). The accuracy in detecting lymph node metastases in colon cancer was 68.6%. Conclusions: Computed tomography is an imaging tool that allows good assessment of the stage of colon cancer preoperatively and there by planning appropriate colon cancer treatment.
