Main Article Content
Abstract
Background: The treatment of diverticulitis remains a topic of debate, ranging from conservative management with antibiotics and dietary restrictions to surgical resection of the affected colon segment. Our study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of non-surgical conservative treatment in patients with acute uncomplicated diverticulitis. Objectives: To assess the outcomes of non-surgical conservative treatment for acute uncomplicated diverticulitis in patients treated at hospitals in Can Tho, Vietnam, from 2022 to 2024. Materials and methods: We conducted a prospective clinical intervention study without a control group. 60 patients diagnosed with acute uncomplicated diverticulitis were treated with a combination of antibiotics and dietary modifications at hospitals in Can Tho from September 2022 to April 2024. Results: The average age of patients was 48 years (ranging from 18 to 87 years), with males comprising 55%. All patients presented with abdominal pain. The average duration of pain was 2.38 days (ranging from 1 to 15 days). The location of inflamed diverticula in the image from the computed tomography scan primarily involved the cecum (58.3%). The Ia degree of diverticulitis was predominant (56.7%). Successful conservative treatment was achieved in all 60 patients (100%). No cases required surgical intervention. There were no complications or mortality. The average hospital stay was 5 days (ranging from 3 to 14 days). The average follow-up duration was 9 months, with one patient experiencing disease recurrence (1.67%). Conclusions: Conservative treatment with antibiotics and dietary modifications is a safe and effective option for patients with acute uncomplicated diverticulitis.
