FORMULATION AND EVALUATION OF ANTIOXIDANT ACTIVITY OF LOTION CONTAINING PINEAPPLE PEEL EXTRACT AND RICE BRAN OIL
Main Article Content
Abstract
Background: The use of natural ingredients is currently a trend, especially in the cosmetics industry, due to the safety and effectiveness of the products. Studies have demonstrated that pineapple peel extract and rice bran oil contain antioxidant compounds, and their combination enhances antioxidant efficacy compared to individual use. Objectives: To formulate a lotion containing high concentrations of pineapple peel extract and rice bran oil with antioxidant properties. Materials and methods: Pineapple peel extract and rice bran oil were evaluated for their antioxidant activity using the IC50 value determined by the 2.2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) method. Subsequently, different ratios of emulsifiers Span 20 and Tween 80 were assessed based on sensory characteristics, viscosity, phase separation, stability, and thinning. The lotion product was then evaluated for its antioxidant capacity. Results: The optimal lotion formulation contained 4.86% Span 20 and 3.69% Tween 80, meeting all requirements. The product exhibited satisfactory sensory properties, stability, thinning behavior, similar to reputable products circulating on the market and demonstrated antioxidant activity with an IC50 value of 115.143 µg/mL. Conclusions: A lotion containing high concentrations of pineapple peel extract and rice bran oil demonstrated antioxidant activity. These research findings provide a basis for further in-depth studies aimed at bringing the product to market.
