Abstract

Backgroud: Anemia is a common consequence in children infected with Helicobacter pylori (Hp). Risk factors for anemia in Hp-infected children are controversial. Objectives: To describe clinical and characteristics and determine the prevalence and associated factors to anemia in Hpinfected children at Can Tho Children's Hospital. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study of all children between the ages of 6 and 16 diagnosed with Hp infection by histopathology and urease test at the Department of Gastroenterology at Can Tho Children's Hospital. Results: There were 92 Hp-infected children in this study, of which 58 were females (63%), mean age was 10.5± 2.7 years. The prevalence of anemia was 25%. Specific clinical signs of the Hp infection group with anemia included: anorexia (26.1%), vomiting (78.1%), dizziness (34.8%), conjunctival pallor (78.3%), pale skin (69.6%), melena (39.1%), and hematemesis (17.4%). The older age group (11-16 years old) was a risk factor for anemia (OR=4.56; 1.41-12.7), iron supplementation (OR=0.13; 0.02-0, 62) was protective factors. Conclusion: The prevalence of anemia in Hp-infected children is relatively high. In children with Hp and anemia, clinical signs are often nonspecific. The risk factors for anemia in Hp-infected children are old age group (>11 years old), no iron supplementation and vitamin C.
