Abstract
Background: Antibiotic misuse is a significant issue, negatively impacting the health of children. Objectives: To analysis of knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding antibiotic use for children among mothers in Tran Hung Dao ward, Quang Ngai City, Quang Ngai Province in 2022. Materials and methods: Across-sectional descriptive study combined with retrospective analysis was conducted on 292 mothers with children under 5 years old. Data were collected through interviews and completion of a pre-designed survey questionnaire. Results: The average age of the mothers in the study was 29.97, with the age group 20-39 comprising the highest proportion at 47.39%. The rate of children who received medications without a prescription was 93.84%, and the rate of mothers involved in the decision-making process for medication use was 92.81%. Among these cases, 4.45% received advice from healthcare professionals, and only 6% used medications solely upon doctors' indications. The percentages of mothers with good knowledge, appropriate attitudes, and good practices were 10%, 15.07%, and 15.75%, respectively. Neither maternal age, educational level, nor family income was associated with their knowledge, attitudes, and practices of antibiotic use. However, an association was observed between good knowledge and appropriate attitudes with maternal occupation, namely work in the medical field (p<0.001). Conclusion: The knowledge, practices, and attitudes regarding antibiotic use for children among mothers in the research area are still inadequate, indicating the necessity for implementing mechanisms to control access to antibiotics and raising awareness among mothers about the adverse effects of antibiotic misuse.
