Abstract

 Background: Prostate cancer is the leading cancer among urinary tract cancers and ranks the 5th among cancer types in men according to GLOBOCAN 2020. Prostate biopsy is the gold standard in diagnosing prostate cancer, whilst- transrectal biopsy is the standard method performed in few years back. We conducted this study at the same time when we implemented this technique at 2 hospitals in CanTho recently. Objectives: To evaluate the results of transrectal prostate biopsy under ultrasound guidance. Materials and methods: A prospective cross-sectional study on 117 prostate tumor patients with biopsy indications at Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy


Hospital and Can Tho Central General Hospital from March 2022 to March 2024. Results: There were 117 male patients included in the study, with an average age of 71.6 ± 9.2 years. The main reason for admission was difficulty in urinating, accounting for 44.4%. The average PSA concentration was 43.7 ng/ml. The rate of detecting prostate cancer after biopsy was 47.9%. Most patients did not have serious complications. Some complications included hematuria 7.8%, urinary retention 5.2%, minor bleeding 10.4%, urinary tract infection 3.5%. Conclusion: Transrectal prostate biopsy under ultrasound guidance is a highly accurate procedure used in diagnosing prostate cancer. It is highly safe and has few complications.
