Abstract

Background: Preterm birth is the leading cause of death in newborns. Preterm birth also leads to many physical and mental problems and is an economic burden for families and society. Therefore, effective screening and prevention of preterm birth brings many benefits to the quality of the population and future life. Objectives: To evaluate the results of preterm birth prevention using a cervical pessary and progesterone between 16-28 weeks and different factors related to the effectiveness of prolonging gestation. Materials and method: A case series study was conducted on 60 cases pregnant women between 16-28 weeks with a short cervical length who were prevented from preterm birth with an Arabin pessary and progesterone at Can Tho Gynecology Obstetrics Hospital from September, 2022 to December 2023. Results: The birth rate at ≥34 weeks was 90%, and at ≥ 37 weeks was 55%. The average time from intervention to birth was 98.9 ± 36.6 days. The most common side effectisincreased vaginal discharge accounting for 30%. Cervical funneling increases the risk of preterm birth <34 weeks with statistical significance, with an odds ratio of 7.0 (p=0.038; CI 1.1-43.0). Conclusion: Using the Arabin pessary and progesterone for preventing preterm birth in pregnant women is an effective method, simple, method with a low side effect rate.
