Abstract

Background: Frailty is a common element of the geriatric syndrome, associated with the adverse outcomes in elderly patients. However, the assessment of frailty is not interested in geriatric clinical practice. Objectives: To determine the prevalence of frailty using the Clinical Frailty Scale and to investigate the factors associated with frailty among elderly inpatients. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 108 inpatients with aged 60 and older at Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital from February 2023 to June 2023. Results: Mean age of participants was 73.4 ± 8.21 years, and 55.6 percent was female, more than 80% of patients had comorbidities. Prevalence of frailty and non-frailty were 64.8% and 35.2%, respectively. The older the age, the higher the prevalence of frailty (p=0.010). Patients with higher levels of education related to the lower prevalence of frailty. Being single, widowed, or divorced increases the risk of frailty by 8.75 times (p<0.001), living alone increases the risk of frailty by 4.67 times (p=0.012), economic conditions increase the risk of frailty 7.65 times (p=0.031), poor nutritional status increases the risk of frailty 3.34 times (p=0.014). Conclusion: Frailty is a ubiquitous problem in elderly inpatients. Recognizing the factors related to frailty is an essential part of comprehensive care and treatment.
