Abstract

Background: Protein-energy wasting (PEW) in end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) patients has increased in recent years, and affects mortality, functional activity, and quality of life of patients. Objectives: we aim to determine the rate of PEW and some related factors in ESKD patients on hemodialysis at Can Tho General Hospital. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was performed on a total of 329 participants with ESKD undergoing hemodialysis at Can Tho General Hospital in 2023. Results: The prevalence of PEW in ESKD patients was 31.9%. BMI, SGA, number of comorbidities, interdialytic weight gain ≥5% were associated with the prevalence of PEW in univariate analysis. In multivariable logistic analysis, BMI, SGA, number of comorbidities, interdialytic weight gain ≥5% were independent risk factors for PEW in ESKD patients on maintenance hemodialysis. BMI are inversely related to PEW. Conclusion: The rate of PEW in ESKD patients on maintenance hemodialysis was high; number of comorbidities, interdialytic weight gain ≥5%, low BMI, poor nutritional status according to SGA were independent risk factors for PEW.
