Abstract

Background: Danshen is a valued herbal plant used in traditional medicine of many countries for treatment of cardiovascular diseases but there have not many anatomical records. Objectives: In this study, the botanical characteristics, DNA barcodes of Danshen were performed for plant identification. Materials and methods: Danshen fresh plants collected in Lai Chau Province are analysed, described and photographed the morphological and anatomical characteristics, the microscopic characteristics of used parts powder; analyzed the DNA barcode on ITS region. Results: Danshen was identified as Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge based on morphological characteristics and DNA barcode, and data of anatomy and traditional powder. Conclusions: The study confirmed the scientific name of “Danshen” in Viet Nam is Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge Lamiaceae.
