Abstract

Background: Falls are one of the main causes of death and illness in the elderly. Falls among hypertensive older adults are an even more serious problem. Objective: To determine the rate of falls in elderly people with hypertension and some related factors to falls in the elderly in Phong Dien district, Can Tho city. Materials and methods: Cross–sectional descriptive study with analysis of 230 elderly people with hypertension living in Phong Dien district, Can Tho city in 2023. Results: The rate of falls accounted for 18.3%; Factors related to falls: People suffering from more than 3 diseases have a higher fall rate than the group without diseases; People with diabetes, musculoskeletal diseases, vision loss, foot sensory disorders, body balance disorders and fear of falling have a higher fall rate than people without the disease (with p<0.05). Conclusion: The rate of falls in elderly people with hypertension is relatively high, higher than reported by medical facilities. Falls will lead to many serious consequences and the cause of disability in the elderly. Therefore, there is a need for supportive interventions and the development of a fall risk assessment toolkit to prevent and prevent falls in the elderly.
