THE CLINICAL, LABORATORY CHARACTERISTICS, RISK FACTORS FROM MOTHER-CHILD OF INFANTS SMALL FOR GESTATIONAL AGE AT CAN THO GYNECOLOGY AND OBSTETRICS HOSPITAL

Abstract
Background: Neonatal small for gestational age has high mortality than neonatal appropriate for gestational age. Objectives: 1. To describe the clinical, laboratory characteristics of infants small for gestational age. 2. Determination of risk factors from mother and child to birth weight of neonatal small for gestational age. Materials and methods: This case-control study on 117 neonates small for gestational age and 234 neonates appropriate for gestational age. Results: Average weight at birth was 1644.4g. Average gestational age was 35.4 weeks. small head circumference accounts for 47.9%, short length accounts for 38.5. The most common illnesses at hospital admission was respiratory failure not due to infection, accounting for 34.2%. Factors affecting birth weight of children: mothers with pre-eclampsia (OR=25.00; p<0.001), mothers with low pre-pregnancy body mass index (OR=3.93; p=0.05), mothers with low gestational weight gain (OR=8.04; p<0.001), mothers exposed to tobacco (OR=6.00; p=0.01), children with birth defects (OR=11.51; p<0.001). Multiple prenancy (OR=11.71; p<0.001), early neonatal sepsis (OR=4.65; p=0.04). Conclusion: Infants small for gestational age often had small head circumference and short length. The highest rates of disease was respiratory failure due to infection. Factors affecting birth weight of children: mothers with pre-eclampsia (OR=25.00; p<0.001), mothers with low prepregnancy body mass index (OR=3.93; p=0.05), mothers with low gestational weight gain (OR=8.04; p<0.001), mothers exposed to tobacco (OR=6.00; p=0.01), children with birth defects (OR=11.51; p<0.001), multiple pregnancies (OR=11.71; p<0.001), early neonatal sepsis (OR=4.65; p=0.04).
