Abstract

Background: Gastric cancer is one of the most common cancers in the world.  In Viet Nam, gastric cancer is the fourth most common cancer in both genders, with almost all patients hospitalized and diagnosed at advanced and metastatic stages. Laparoscopic gastrectomy is currently considered to be one of the radical treatments. Objectives: To evaluate the outcomes following laparoscopic gastrectomy for advanced gastric cancer and without distant metastasis. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study on 37 cases of advanced gastric cancer patients without distant metastases who underwent laparoscopic gastrectomy at Can Tho Central General Hospital and Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital from January 2019 to May 2021. These patients were followed up after surgery until the end of the study. Results: The average age was 58.4, and the male/female ratio was 4/1. Thirty-one patients underwent laparoscopic distal gastrectomy, and six patients underwent totally laparoscopic gastrectomy. The mean operation time was 286.8 min, with a mean blood loss of 54.5 mL. The mean number of retrieved lymph nodes was 11.8 nodes. The mean proximal resection margins were 6.4 cm. The average length of post-operative was 8.4 days. There were two wound infections. After three months of surgery, the result: Good 75.7%, Moderate 16.2%, and Bad 8.1%. At six months and 12 months after surgery, survival rates were 97.1% and 90.6%, respectively. The median follow-up period was 15.8 months. Conclusion: Laparoscopic gastrectomy for advanced gastric cancer is a safe procedure.
