Abstract

 Background: Understanding demands and barriers of studying abroad helps to find suitable options for students in health sciences to study in a foreign country efficiently. Objectives: To identify needs, barriers, and associated factors of studying abroad of medical students. Materials and methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study on students at Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy from July 8, 2019 to July 15, 2019. The data was collected from the answers for the questionnaire in the registration form of the Workshop on Studying Abroad organized by our university, with the main content of evaluating the demand for studying abroad and identifying some barriers and factors affecting student's decision to study abroad. Results: We included 88 students (56.8% female) and 53.4% of the study students have the need to study abroad. Equipping with foreign languages was considered the most necessary step in the preparation stage, accounting for 96.6% and the study subjects were aware that students with language barrier group had less need to study abroad than the other (OR = 2.5; 95% CI: 1.0 – 6.26; p = 0.047). Economic condition was considered as the most influential barrier with 90.9%. Conclusion: Promoting the development and applying English in teaching and learning as well as finding solutions to overcome the barriers that affect the decision to study abroad contribute to create favorable conditions for students in health sciences to have more opportunities to acquire new knowledge and technologies in the world.
