Abstract

Background: Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) are a most common and distressing symptoms within the first 24 hours post-operatively, especially on biliary surgery. Therefore, management of PONV for patients is essential to the best recovery outcome for patients. Objectives: To evaluate the efficacy of combination of dexamethasone and ondansetron for postoperative nausea and vomiting in patients undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Materials and methods: A prospective, cross sectional study was conducted with 64 patients who undergoing laparoscopic cholescystectomy with general anesthesia and IV 4 mg dexamethasone after induction, IV 8 mg ondansetron at ending of surgery. The incidence, severity and complication of PONV were observed within 06 hours postoperatively. Results: The incidence of PONV within 0–06 hours postoperatively was 14.9%. Rescue antiemetics was required in 1 patient (1.5%). In our study, the most frequently reported adverse effects were 9.0% shivering, 16.4% dizziness, 1.5% headache and 1.5% transient dyspnea. Conclusion: The incidence of complete response within 06 hours postoperatively is 85.1%.
