CLINICAL CHARACTERISTICS, X RAY AND OUTCOMES OF MINIMALLY INVASIVE PLATE OSTEOSYNTHESIS FOR DISTAL TIBIA FRACTURES

Abstract
Background: Distal tibia fractures are the common trauma that always brings difficulties and challenges in treatment. Minimally invasive plate osteosynthesis (MIPO), until now, is the most optimal method for this fracture. At Can Tho Central General Hospital, although surgeons have applied and implemented this method widely, there still have not been in-depth studies to evaluate its effectiveness. Objectives: examine characteristics of clinical, X-ray, and outcomes of minimally invasive plate osteosynthesis for distal tibia fractures. Materials and methods: patients with distal tibia fractures were treated by the MIPO technique at Can Tho Central General Hospital from March 2018 to May 2020. We noted some characteristics of patients, clinical, x-ray. Treatment results include fixation results, bone healing, and rehabilitation. Results: The average age was 45.2±13.3. The main AO/OTA type was 43A1. The hospitalization time was 10.7±3.5 days. Results of very good and good in postoperative fixation were 98%. Average bone healing time was 19,1±2,9 weeks with a case of malunion and another one of delayed union. Rehabilitation was accounted for 97.8% of good and very good. Overall results were very good and good at 95.6%. Conclusion: minimally invasive plate osteosynthesis gives very satisfactory results after surgery. It has a high rate of bone healing and good rehabilitation. Therefore, patients can take back their movement early.
