Abstract

Background: Using simulation models is a method in preclinical training about anesthesia at Faculty of Odonto-Stomatology, Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy. However, it still has some limitations that cause a certain anxiety for students when administering local anesthesia on patients for the first time. Objectives: 1) To assess accurate skill in local anesthesia practice on model in two groups of fourth-year Odonto-Stomatology students, Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy in 2022–2023. 2) To survey anxiety levels before practicing local anesthesia on patients in two groups of fourth-year Odonto-Stomatology students, Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy in 2022–2023. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study of 40 fourth-year Odonto-Stomatology students practicing Oral surgery I at Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy. Gender, accurate skill in local anesthesia practice on model and anxiety levels before practicing local anesthesia on patients were identified  through  interviews  using  offthe-shelf  surveys after practicing. Results: Percentage of students accurately practicing local anesthesia on model were relatively high (97,5% of students practiced accurately more 5/10 criteria). Female students felt more anxious than male students when surveyed in both cases (20% in female and 2,5% in male when first practicing local anesthesia skill on model; 42,5% in female and 17% in male if the first injection is performed on patient). Conclusion: Accurate skill in local anesthesia practice on models in students was quite good, but many students were still worried if injecting on patients.
