ORAL HEALTH KNOWLEDGE AND ORAL HYGIENE PRACTICES AMONG FIRST YEAR AND FINAL 2-YEAR DENTAL STUDENTS AT CAN THO UNIVERSITY OF MEDICINE AND PHARMACY IN 2022

Abstract

Background: Knowledge of oral health is a fundamental prerequisite for healthy behavior, allowing individuals to take measures for oral health care. Objective: To determine the correct knowledge and oral hygiene practices rate among first-year and final 2-year undergraduate dental students in 2022. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study based on a 3-part survey questionnaire, including 24 contents about oral health knowledge and oral hygiene practices of 120 students of Odonto-Stomatology faculty in the first, fifth and sixth years of Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy in the academic year 2021-2022 was conducted. Results: The majority have good knowledge about oral care with the correct answer rate of 78.4%. Nearly all of the students participated in the study brushed their teeth at least twice a day (96.2% among first-year students; 100% among fifth- and sixth-year students). There is a difference between 1st year students and final-2 year students with statistical significance (p<0.05) in the frequency of flossing and the frequency of dental check-ups. Conclusions: Most students of Odonto-Stomatology faculty, Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy have good knowledge and practices in daily oral care. However, there is a statistically significant difference between first-year and final 2-year students in some oral care measures.
