Abstract

Background: In order to optimize treatment effectiveness, it is necessary to determine the current situation and assess the safety and appropriateness of proton pump inhibitors medication utilization. Objectives: To describe the characteristics and evaluate the safety and appropriateness of PPI medication use in outpatients at the Department of Clinical Examination, Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy in 2022-2023. Materials and methods: 520 outpatient prescriptions for PPI medication at the Department of Clinical Examination, Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy from September 2022 to April 2023. Assessing the appropriateness is based on the manufacturer's instructions and treatment protocols provided by the Ministry of Health. The determination of safety is established through the examination of drug interactions using two resources, Drugs.com and Medscape.com. Results: The highest proportion of PPI prescriptions was observed in the working age group of 18-59 years (63.85%), while the <18 age group had the lowest proportion (3.85%). Females had a higher prescription rate compared to males (59.23% and 40.77% respectively). The longest duration of both prescription and treatment with PPIs was ≥ 14 days was 78.65%. Esomeprazole was the most frequently prescribed PPI (46.92%), followed by Pantoprazole (22.31%), and Lansoprazole had the lowest proportion (0.39%). The proportion of prescriptions with drug interactions was 15.96%, inappropriate PPI prescriptions accounted for 8.56%, unsafe prescriptions were 15.19%, and the combination of inappropriate and unsafe prescriptions reached 20.77%.  Conclusion: The rate of inappropriate and unsafe use of PPI medications is quite high. This can have an impact on the effectiveness and cost of treatment. Enhancing communication and drug information is necessary to ensure effective treatment, safe medication usage, and cost savings for patients.
